• Whole neighborhoods have been devastated. At least 10,000 properties have been destroyed, the Los Angeles County assessor said. One of the wildfires, the coastal Palisades Fire, could be the costliest in US history, according to a climate expert. Officials on Friday said firefighters have made some progress and that the blaze is 8% contained.
• Firefighting teams are expecting more wind and dry conditions to continue to complicate efforts into next week. If winds are too strong, firefighting aircraft won’t be able to take off. Here’s why California is uniquely susceptible to the worst effects of the human-caused climate crisis.
Where things stand as firefighters work to get Los Angeles blazes under control
From CNN's Elise Hammond
Firefighters made progress on several fires raging in Los Angeles overnight — but they are now bracing for more winds Friday afternoon.
About 153,000 people are still under evacuation orders, according to officials.
It has been a busy start to the year for fire crews. Cal Fire said it has battled at least 90 fires in the first 10 days of 2025.
Here’s where things stand with the largest fires in LA County:
Palisades Fire: Burning more than 20,000 acres so far, the Palisades Fire is 8% contained, according to Cal Fire. It has destroyed more than 5,300 structures, the third-most in state history.
Eaton Fire: The Eaton Fire has destroyed 4,000-plus structures, the fourth-most in state history. At 3% contained, it has burned more than 13,600 acres so far, according to fire officials. Several agencies are assisting, and resources from Canada were also expected to arrive today, Los Angeles County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone said.
Kenneth Fire: This fire, burning across the West Hills in Los Angeles County and in neighboring Ventura County, is 35% contained, officials said. It has burned about 1,000 acres so far, according to Cal Fire. California Gov. Gavin Newsom said in the early hours of Friday that 900 additional firefighters were deployed to battle the blaze.
Here’s what else to know:
Devastation: The overwhelming majority of homes and businesses in Pacific Palisades have been destroyed by the Palisades Fire, satellite imagery from Airbus shows. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass says President Joe Biden and the Federal Emergency Management Agency have pledged to reimburse disaster relief expenses. At least 10,000 properties have been damaged — and hundreds more will likely be identified in the coming days, according to Los Angeles County Assessor Jeff Prang.
Response: More than 600 California National Guardsmen are assisting in the fire response in California, the Pentagon said. National Guard personnel were already deployed to the area around the Eaton Fire Thursday night. A curfew continues for the Palisades and Eaton fire areas in all mandatory evacuation zones from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. local time, Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna said.
Emergency alert system: Los Angeles County is working to fix a problem that led to residents receiving evacuation warnings in error yesterday, Office of Emergency Management Director Kevin McGowan said. He said the alerts are sent though a wireless system and urged people not to disable the emergency messages.
Aerial firefighting: One of the two Los Angeles County “Super Scooper” aircraft is being repaired after it hit a small drone, Marrone said, adding that it should be flying again by Monday. At the federal level, eight C-130 aircraft equipped with modular aerial firefighting systems are being activated, Deputy Pentagon press secretary Sabrina Singh said.
The forecast: Winds are expected to remain gusty into Friday afternoon in the fire zone. The National Weather Service in Los Angeles said offshore winds will continue into next week, peaking Sunday, then again Tuesday or Wednesday. Strong winds have been causing the fires to spread rapidly and have complicated firefighting efforts, especially those in the sky.
